The Peregrine Falcons in downtown Buffalo have a long nesting
history.
In 1996, Mark Kandel of the NYS DEC installed the nestbox on
the 19th floor of the Statler Building. On March 22nd, 1999
the Buffalo Ornithological Society who through a joint effort
with the other two partners installed the viewing monitors in
the main lobby of the Statler Building on March 15th of 2001.
The Buffalo Audubon Society (BAS) had been involved from the
beginning and finally put the camera live on the internet in
2002. The website and camera have been run by volunteers of
Buffalo Audubon ever since. In late 2006 and early 2007 the
DEC & BAS staff reorganized the project to insure it continues
to provide the general public with the excitement of watching
the Buffalo falcons raise their young.

Notes:
The Wainwright female was hatched June 20, 1993 at the Canadian
Captive Breeding Facility at Wainwright, Alberta. It was taken
to Killarney Provincial Park in Ontario, where it was released
August 1, 1993; 250 miles north of Buffalo.
The Hillsbourough female is a wild bird, banded by the Canadian
Wildlife Service. It was hatched May 20, 1998 (approx.) at a
nest on a cliff overlooking a waterway near Hillsbourough, New
Brunswick, Canada. This is 715 miles east of Buffalo. The Wainwright
female was killed by the Hillsbourough female on April 3, 1999
when it tried to regain the Statler nest box after it had been
taken over by the latter and her mate.
The small egg clutch (2) in 2004 may be attributed to a struggle
for the nest by an intruding female during egg-laying.
In 2006 the female was found injured on the sidewalk below
the Statler Building. After she died, the DEC discovered that
she died from Trichomoniasis. It is a fungal disease transmitted
by
consumption of pigeons. .
In 2007 a new famale took over the Statler nest and made it
her own.
