IMPORTANT BIRD AREAS IN WNY

Important Bird Areas

Habitat loss and degradation due to human expansion as our population soars are the most serious threat to the survival of many bird species and other wildlife here and abroad. The Important Bird Areas (IBA) Program is a worldwide response to this challenge.

Habitat loss and fragmentation are the most serious threats facing populations of birds across America and around the world. Unless we can slow the rapid destruction and degradation of habitat, populations of many birds may decline to dangerously low levels. The IBA program is a global effort to identify the areas that are most important for maintaining bird populations, and focus conservation efforts at protecting these sites.

The aim of the IBA Program is to identify and conserve key breeding and feeding sites for birds. An Important Bird Area is a place that provides essential habitat for one or more species of bird, whether in breeding season, winter, or during migration. These sites are considered to be exceptionally important for bird conservation. Protection of the most critical of these sites is one important approach to the protection of many bird species. Within the United States, the IBA program is part of the larger Partners in Flight program that, in turn, is part of the North Ameican Bird Conservation Initiative. These larger programs have additional landscape and management-based approaches to bird conservation. Taken together, these approaches are designed to help ensure the survival of all bird species.

Niagara River Important Bird Area (NRIBA)

Upon the adoption of the IBA designation for the entire Niagara Region corridor in 1996, Buffalo Audubon has ‘adopted’ this IBA and dedicated itself to protecting and promoting the IBA by contributing to efforts called for in the management Plan, written and adopted by the 29 IBA Partners. Buffalo Audubon’s efforts have focused on:

• Creation and National marketing of 120 mile Audubon Niagara Birding Trail to promote birding throughout this extensive IBA and encourage development of eco-tourism in the region.

• Leading a partnership including Buffalo Niagara Convention and Visitors Bureau, NYS Parks, US Corps of Engineers, Seaway Trails, US Fish & Wildlife Service, CFGB, and others to create, market, and distribute the Nature Tourism in Buffalo Niagara Guide.

The Audubon mission worldwide – embraced and pursued in Western New York State by Buffalo Audubon Society – seeks to conserve habitat for a healthier environment for all animal and plant species, including people. But Audubon has always had a special emphasis on birds going back to its founding, nationally in 1905, locally in 1909. Much of our educational, recreational, preservations and public policy programs have birds and bird habitat as core elements. This page offers bird and birding resources to enhance your particular interests in birds and to assist in your overall enjoyment of, and stewardship of, the natural world. Be sure to also visit the online calendar for current programs and activities at one of our centers or elsewhere in the community!
