Iroquois Observations!

Iroquois Observations! Are family friendly programs designed to provide factual information to the public about migratory birds and other wildlife as well as the ecological significance of the refuge and the diversity of habitat and wildlife at Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge.
Every Saturday during the peak of migration (late March – Early May) we will offer a variety of fun, educational activities such as Owl Prowls, Canoe Trips, Eagle Watch, Focus On series and Field trips and walks.
All programs are free and open to the public.

Most of our activities are outdoors. Please dress according to the weather.

 

Focus On Series: Meet at headquarters, 1101 Casey Road, Basom NY 14013
A guest lecture series best suited for adults and youth 12 years and older.

Hands On Series: Meet at headquarters, 1101 Casey Road, Basom NY 14013
Speakers present an informative nature program and a craft, activity or walk. 1-2 hours in length. Fun for the whole family. Children please be accompanied by an adult.

Field Trips: Trips begin and end at Cayuga Pool Overlook on Route 77. An experienced birding team will take you to many of the best birding sites of the refuge complex and surrounding areas. We start at 9am and end by Noon. Drive your own car or car-pool.
Best suited for older children and adults.

Eagle Watch: Meet at the Cayuga Pool Overlook, Route 77. Spotting Scopes will be set up at the Cayuga Pool platform and staffed by a team of experienced birdwatchers. Come see an active Bald Eagle’s nest as well as a large diversity of migratory birds such as; Ruddy Ducks, Pied Billed Grebes, Northern Shovelers, American Coots, Canada Geese, Great Blue Herons. The Eagle Watch attracts families, new birders and seasoned birders alike. We make every effort to allow you to use a spotting scope or a pair of binoculars.

Owl Prowls: Meet at refuge headquarters, 1101 Casey Road, Basom, NY 14013
Join in a nocturnal search for owls. Be prepared for an off road walk. We will caravan to another site. For the entire family. New this year: Pre-Registration is required. Call 585-948-5445.

Canoe Treks: Meet at Knowlesville Road Bridge.
Explore the primitive beauty of Oak Orchard Creek with an experienced guide.
Bring your own canoe or kayak. Life Jackets are required.

Woodcock Walk: Meet at Swallow Hollow Nature Trail on Knowlesville Road.
We will search for the secretive American Woodcock to watch its curious mating ritual.
Suitable for the whole family.

Warbler Walks: Please check schedule for meeting locations. The early birder gets the warbler – we hope. Bring binoculars. Best suited for older children and adults.

Secretive Birds of the Marsh Walk: Meet at Kanyoo Nature Trail, route 77.
Visit the hidden world of Rails, Bitterns and Soras. After a short presentation we will travel to another site. For the entire family

Tree ID Walks: Meet at Kanyoo Nature Trail, Route 77.
Join an experienced guide on a pleasant walk through the woods to identify trees.
Adults and older children.

Special Evening program: Meet at Kanyoo Nature Trail, Route 77.
Find out about wild night life including owls, bugs and stars.
For the entire family.

 

Directions: From the I-90 take Exit 48A (Pembroke-Medina). Proceed north on Rte. 77 for about 6.4 miles to the blinking red light in Alabama. Turn left continuing on Route 77 (Lewiston Road). Turn right on Casey Road to Headquarters, or continue on Rte 77 to reach Kanyoo Nature Trail and Cayuga Pool Overlook. If you get to the intersection of Meadville Rd. and Salt Works Rd., you have gone about a half-mile too far!

Kanyoo Nature Trail and Cayuga Pool Overlook are both located on Rte 77. Look for the INWR trailhead signs.
