Iroquois Observations!

Iroquois Observations! is a program designed to provide information to the public about migratory birds at the Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge as well as the ecological significance of the Refuge and the diversity of habitat and wildlife. Seasonally, knowledgeable birders equipped with spotting scopes, binoculars and reference books, are stationed at an overlook to provide visitors with a closeup view, identification and natural history of the visiting birds. Driving tours to other nearby locations and walking tours are also available to experience the full complexity of the Refuge. All programs are free and open to the public. Family days and other activities are also offered. Check the schedule for full listings!

Most of our activities are outdoors. Please dress appropriately for the weather.

Focus On: Speakers present an informative and entertaining nature program at the Refuge Headquarters/Visitors Center at 1101 Casey Road. Phone: 585-948-5445.

A variety of topics will be presented. Some may involve short walks or field trips. These presentations are designed to be informative. They are generally suitable for interested and motivated children.

Birding Field Trip: Meet at Cayuga Pool Overlook, Rte 77. We start at 9:00 am and usually end by Noon. You are free to leave early. Drive your own car or car-pool. An experienced birder will take you to some of the many areas of the refuge complex and surrounding areas. This is a great way to start to become familiar with the Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge and the Oak Orchard and Tonawanda Wildlife Management Areas.

Scope Watch: Spotting scopes and binoculars will be set up at the Cayuga Pool Overlook and staffed by experienced birders. Up-close views (depending on weather and avian co-operation!) of several dozen different bird species are possible. Bald Eagles, Ruddy Ducks, Pied-Billed Grebes, Northern Shovelers, Coots, Teals, Herons, Bitterns & Canada Geese are just some of the birds you might see! The scope watch attracts families, new birders, and seasoned birders alike. We make every effort to allow responsible children to use a spotting scope or a pair of binoculars. We provide a few minutes of explanation on the proper use of the equipment and have bird guides readily available.

Family Days: Fun activities for young and old; nature walks, crafts, exhibits, live animals. Be sure to check the schedule.

Bird/Nature Walks: Suitable for the whole family. An experienced guide will lead you on an informative walk, identifying the birds you may encounter. Walks will be between 1 - 2 miles in length over generally flat terrain. Dress for the weather. Bring insect repellent, sun block and drinking water, as needed.

Owl Prowls: An after dark exploration for owls. Unless noted in the schedule, we will meet at the Kanyoo Nature Trail Check Station. A short program on the owls we may see and then caravan to a nearby site (at the leader's discretion). Dress for the weather and possible wet areas. Be prepared for an off-road walk. Bring a flashlight and bug spray! Binoculars may be helpful.

Woodcock Walk: Enjoy an evening spring walk listening & looking for woodcocks. Bring your binoculars and bug spray.

Goose Roost: Join birders at dusk while we watch Canada geese return for the night to Cayuga Pool. An awesome sight. Scopes will be set up for viewing.

Directions: From the I-90 take Exit 48A (Pembroke-Medina). Proceed north on Rte. 77 for about 6.4 miles to the blinking red light in Alabama. Turn left continuing on Route 77 (Lewiston Road). Turn right on Casey Road to Headquarters, or continue on Rte 77 to reach Kanyoo Nature Trail and Cayuga Pool Overlook. If you get to the intersection of Meadville Rd. and Salt Works Rd., you have gone about a half-mile too far!
